General::MUCH NEEDED: Pictures or footage of Bay Shore old and new
Hi all.

A documentary is being produced for Bay Shore's tricentennial, which will be shown at the Bolton Center in early June. I am in need of pictures, and footage that has been shot over the decades - the declining years included.

I am also interested in any footage or photos of time spent on Kelly's lake. Footage of the lake being drained or covered - and expanses of land that have long disappeared.

Seniors are especially encouraged to share their photos with us.

You can contact me at stephiewalter@gmail.com

Thanks!

Lighthouse Rescue Clinic- Expensive and Unreliable [by CatOwner]

General::Lighthouse Rescue Clinic- Expensive and Unreliable
Do not bring your amimal to Lighthouse Rescue Clinic for emergency treatment!
I recently lost my cat due to the fact that they could not offer me a diagnosis in time!
They did unneeded tests (FIV/Lukemia) and Bus dipstick tests that are unreliable.
They did not tell me that they could not get a diagnosis or ask permission for any of the tests beforehand.
They sent me to another emergency hospital with only an IV (unhooked up) ans some hot water bottles!
The emergency hospital costs $1000 for tests ans overnight stay!
Lighthouse does not have a blood pressure machine...how can they perform surgery without one? They cannot perform blood tests - they send out for everything.
I'd love to say more, but I'm too upset.
The fact that they could not even offer me pallative care for a dying pet is too disgusting for me to handle.
it's either cough up the money your euthanize your pet -
and that is unacceptable.
Vets on Long Island have become more interested in money than they are in treating your pets.
Please find your treatments elsewhere.

I hope this serves as a warning to owners thinking of bringing their animals for any emergency work to the Lighthouse Rescue Clinic. Their care is unreliable, now that Dr. Perkins is no longer the attending vet.

General::Bay Shore 1970s
Hi all, I lived in Bay Shore for a while back in the 60"s. I attended 5th Ave. Elem. 63-64. I was walking distance from the school. I remember a little strip mall that had a pharmacy/soda shop. When you walked in, there was a candy counter to light up every kid's eyes. I used to get the taffy at 2 for a nickel!! and cream sodas for a dime that they made right there. Also a few years before that we lived in a big house that was next door to the Bay Shore theater. If anyone has pictures to share that would be great!!

Looking for an old victorian house [by volorgas]

General::Looking for an old victorian house
BayShore Historians,
I am looking to find out if an old victorian house still exists in BayShore. Here is what I know. The house was built between 1890 and 1895 and was built for someone named J. J. Carman. I believe the house had a wrap-a-round porch and a square tower with a tall pyramid shaped roof. The house was designed by an architect from Knoxville, Tennessee named George F. Barber. I would like to find out if the house still exists and if not, what happened to it and when. I would also like to know if there might be any historic old photos of the house, perhaps in the local history section of the library. If you think you know of this house, would you please contact me by posting to this forum or sending me an email. Thanks.

Chris DiMattei

TOPS Club interest in Bay Shore? (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Non profit non commercial [by Go2IT]

General::TOPS Club interest in Bay Shore? (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Non profit non commercial
I live in Bay Shore, and I've been going to West Islip's TOPS Club group (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) because there is no Bay Shore group. And, I was wondering if anyone had an interest in a group based in Bay Shore?

(I do not work for TOPS, I am only a member who thinks it's great!)

Basically, TOPS is a non-commercial, non-profit support group for overweight men, women and teens. Been around since 1948. Meets in local libraries, community centers, etc. Cost is only $24 a YEAR in membership and only $5 a month in local dues. Weekly weigh-ins.

I don't mind going to West Islip's group (it's at the West Islip library, on Monday nights 6:30 p.m., on Udall's) but I thought there may be a possibility of a Bay Shore group opening up if enough people thought it would work!

Anyone who is interested in putting together a Bay Shore group - let me know.

(There are also groups that meet in Islip, West Islip, Sayville) etc. so Bay Shore should be a good fit.

check out the non-profit website topsclubs.org

The Hurricane of 1938 [by Noodles]

General::The Hurricane of 1938
On Sept. 21, 1938, a hurricane struck parts of New York and New England, causing widespread damage and claiming more than 600 lives.

My father’s uncle was chief of police of Ocean Beach on Fire Island.

At the height of the hurricane he walked from Ocean Beach to Point O'Woods to rescue a 90 year old woman trapped in her beach house home. He carried her on his back along the shore back to Ocean Beach and to safety. He was lauded and recognized as “the Hero of the Hurricane of ‘38”. Ocean Beach held a gala gathering to award Clarence “Babe” Morriss an engraved gold watch and caricature drawn by a famous NYC newspaper cartoonist and signed by all those attending. One guest who did not attend but who sent a note of congratulations I still have was General George C. Marshall a friend and often visitor to Ocean Beach.

Just a small foot note in history that happened 69 years ago.

Andy Morris

Associate Director of Admissions
Binghamton University
PO Box 6001
Binghamton, NY 13902-6001
607-777-3485-phone
607-777-4445-fax
ahmorris@binghamton.edu
SN: andyhmorris
